What are NVQs?

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are based on national occupational standards. These standards describe what competent people in a particular occupation are expected to be able to do. They cover all the main parts of an occupation, including current best practice, the ability to adapt to future requirements, and the knowledge and understanding that underpin competent performance.

What are the benefits of an NVQ?

  • A chance to develop and reach your goals.
  • Better job prospects.
  • Higher earning potential.
  • A stepping stone to management roles.
  • It shows a commitment to professional development.
  • It shows competence to the industry's occupational standard.

Am I guaranteed to pass?

We give full support to all our candidates to pass and achieve their qualifications. Our assessors are experienced and guide you throughout the process.

We can extend the assessment period for those with special needs and those who need more experience to meet the qualification criteria.

How long does it take?

Assessment starts as soon as you register: we contact you to plan it and arrange site visits for observation and professional discussion. Usually one or two visits are enough for a Level 2 NVQ. Levels 3 to 7 may need a few more, depending on the learner. Because we observe you while you work, there is little downtime. When you have finished, we apply for your certificate from the awarding body; it can take up to two weeks to arrive.

How are the qualifications assessed?

Our NVQs are delivered or assessed through a combination of direct observation of performance, professional discussions, professional witness reports and written assignments completed on workbooks we provide.

Do NVQs still exist?

Not under the RQF framework. But as NVQs are still widely recognised by employers and individuals, terms surrounding them have been inherited from the NQF. Some RQF qualifications may still be described as NVQs where they are based on recognised occupational standards.

What is an NVQ equivalent to?

NVQs are vocational qualifications, but they can be measured against other certifications. The rough equivalents for each level:

  • NVQ Level 1: 3 or 4 GCSEs at grades D to G
  • NVQ Level 2: 4 to 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C
  • NVQ Level 3: 2 A Levels
  • NVQ Level 4: Higher Education Certificate
  • NVQ Level 5: Higher Education Diploma or Foundation Degree
  • NVQ Level 6: Undergraduate Degree or Degree Apprenticeship
  • NVQ Level 7: Master's Degree or PGCE

What are the NVQ levels?

There are seven main NVQ levels (not counting entry level), and each one involves learning and applying particular work-based competencies.

  • Entry level: for those without any previous qualifications or knowledge. Applying basic knowledge and skills on a general level.
  • NVQ Level 2: An introduction to the subject area you choose: structured tasks, and learning and applying fundamental knowledge.
  • NVQ Level 3: The range of duties becomes wider and more complex. Autonomy and responsibility are greater at this level, with some control and guidance needed.
  • NVQ Level 4: A specialist and detailed level of learning, usually covering a specific area of work. Ideal for those looking to manage others or work in technical roles.
  • NVQ Level 5: Learning about an area of work at a deeper level, so you can understand and respond to complex situations with a high level of expertise. Also covers senior management and the training of others.
  • NVQ Level 6: Intended for senior managers: an in-depth understanding of your discipline, building on the knowledge you have already acquired.
  • NVQ Level 7: The highest level of the NVQ structure, showing that you are an expert in your field. Intended for more senior managers.
