About this timeframe
NVQ assessment duration varies depending on each candidate's experience, availability, workplace access, responsiveness and timely completion of assessment requirements. Experienced candidates with suitable existing evidence or relevant previous qualifications may complete their assessments considerably sooner through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), where applicable. Candidates requiring additional time or assessment support may take longer.
The stated duration is an indicative assessment completion period, not a guaranteed timeframe. All required assessment criteria must be satisfactorily met before certification can be recommended.
Please Note: The estimated completion period relates to the assessment process and does not necessarily include the time required for internal quality assurance, awarding-body verification and certificate issuance. Certification is subject to the satisfactory completion of all assessment and applicable quality assurance requirements.

The 360 excavator NVQ is the Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations (Construction) for people who operate 360 degree excavators on site. It is awarded by ProQual and regulated by Ofqual.
The NVQ is one of the prerequisites for a CPCS card. It is how you move from a red Trained Operator card to a blue Competent Operator card. We assess you at your workplace, anywhere in the UK.
Who it is for
This NVQ is for plant operators who already work with a 360 degree excavator. For example:
- operators with a red CPCS Trained Operator card who need to upgrade
- experienced operators who need a nationally recognised qualification
- operators whose employer or site asks for a blue CPCS card
What you will cover
Every pathway has two units on general health, safety and welfare and on productive working. The 360 excavator unit then shows that you can:
- read drawings, risk assessments and method statements, and follow them
- plan the work with the people around you
- work safely and keep to the law and site rules
- choose the right resources for the job
- protect the work and the area around it from damage
- finish the work on time
- excavate to the required specification
How it is assessed
There is no exam. ProQual says plant NVQs must be assessed in a work environment. Your assessor watches you operate the excavator on site and collects evidence. Evidence can include:
- observation of you at work
- a portfolio of evidence
- questions, spoken or written
- witness statements from your supervisor
The result is a pass or a fail.
Card and progression
For the blue card, NOCN CPCS also asks you to pass the NOCN Operative Health, Safety and Environment Test and the CPCS theory and practical tests at an accredited CPCS test centre.
If you hold a red Trained Operator card, it lasts two years. You must register for and achieve your NVQ in that time to upgrade. A blue Competent Operator card is valid for five years.
When you can start
How long it takes depends on your experience, your availability, access to your workplace and how quickly you send your evidence.
You can start when you are ready. There are no set course dates for an NVQ.
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements. You need to be working with a 360 excavator, so the assessor can see you at work. Before you register, we look at your experience and your card to plan your assessment.
