About this timeframe

NVQ assessment duration varies depending on each candidate's experience, availability, workplace access, responsiveness and timely completion of assessment requirements. Experienced candidates with suitable existing evidence or relevant previous qualifications may complete their assessments considerably sooner through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), where applicable. Candidates requiring additional time or assessment support may take longer.

The stated duration is an indicative assessment completion period, not a guaranteed timeframe. All required assessment criteria must be satisfactorily met before certification can be recommended.

Please Note: The estimated completion period relates to the assessment process and does not necessarily include the time required for internal quality assurance, awarding-body verification and certificate issuance. Certification is subject to the satisfactory completion of all assessment and applicable quality assurance requirements.

CPCS construction plant NVQs

You move pallets, blocks and loads around site all day. Every lift near people, scaffolds and open edges is a risk, and site managers know it. That is why many sites ask forklift and telehandler drivers for a blue CPCS card.

This Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations is the qualification you need for that card. We assess you on your own site, doing your normal day of lifting and placing.

Who it is for

It is for drivers who already handle loads with a forklift or a telehandler on construction sites. For example, you:

  • drive a telehandler on a housing or commercial site and hold a red CPCS card
  • drive a forklift in a yard or on site and want your skill on paper
  • are a groundworker or labourer who now drives the telehandler most days

Machines this page covers

We list this NVQ for forklifts and telehandlers. These are different CPCS categories, so tell us which machine you drive and what is on your card. We check it matches before you pay anything.

What your assessor looks for

Your assessor watches you plan a lift, load and unload, travel with a load and place it safely, among the people around you. You collect proof for each unit in your portfolio. Proof can be:

  • what your assessor sees you do
  • your answers to questions, spoken or written
  • worksheets and short test papers
  • records of jobs you have done

There are no formal entry requirements. We check your skills and knowledge first and plan from there.

Red card to blue card

Does the NVQ give me a blue card on its own? No. CPCS asks for three things when you upgrade a red Trained Operator card:

  • a red card for the category, still in date or with an extension
  • a health, safety and environment test passed in the last two years
  • the NVQ, with the right units for your category

You send proof to CPCS and it issues a blue Competent Operator card for five years. Your red card lasts two years, so start the NVQ early.

Cost and time

£660 inc VAT (£550 + VAT), paid in two halves or in full. Typically 4 to 6 weeks of assessment, not a guaranteed time. Phone 01322 743726 and tell us your machine and your card.
