About this timeframe
NVQ assessment duration varies depending on each candidate's experience, availability, workplace access, responsiveness and timely completion of assessment requirements. Experienced candidates with suitable existing evidence or relevant previous qualifications may complete their assessments considerably sooner through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), where applicable. Candidates requiring additional time or assessment support may take longer.
The stated duration is an indicative assessment completion period, not a guaranteed timeframe. All required assessment criteria must be satisfactorily met before certification can be recommended.
Please Note: The estimated completion period relates to the assessment process and does not necessarily include the time required for internal quality assurance, awarding-body verification and certificate issuance. Certification is subject to the satisfactory completion of all assessment and applicable quality assurance requirements.
The Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Work Supervision (often called OWS) is for people who supervise others in their own construction trade. It is awarded by ProQual and regulated by Ofqual. You show your competence through the work you already do, so there are no exams.
This NVQ is a common route to a gold CSCS Supervisor card. We assess you at your workplace or remotely, anywhere in the UK.
Who it is for
This NVQ is for supervisors, foremen and chargehands who lead a team in one trade. For example:
- site carpentry
- bricklaying
- roofing
- partitions and cladding
If you supervise a whole site, our Level 4 NVQ in Construction Site Supervision may suit you better.
What you will cover
You complete six mandatory units and at least two optional units. In plain words, you show that you can:
- confirm the work, the resources and the method of work
- keep good working relationships
- keep health, safety, environment and welfare practices in place
- organise the work
- check progress against the schedule
Optional units cover plant and equipment, checking work meets the standards, team performance and dimensional control.
How it is assessed
There is no exam. An NVQ checks that you can do your job to the national standard. Your assessor collects evidence from the work you already do. Evidence can include:
- a visit to your workplace, where the assessor watches you work
- a portfolio of your own work documents
- a professional discussion with your assessor
- witness statements from people you work with
- records of the work your team has done
We assess on site at your workplace or remotely, for candidates working across the UK. The result is a pass or a fail. ProQual, the awarding body, checks our assessment through its own quality assurance.
Card and progression
CSCS needs your NVQ and the CITB Specialist Supervisory test, passed within the last two years. A CSCS card is valid for five years.
Next, you could move on to our Level 4 NVQ in Construction Site Supervision.
When you can start
How long it takes depends on your experience, your availability, access to your workplace and how quickly you send your evidence.
You can start when you are ready. There are no set course dates for an NVQ.
Entry requirements
Before you can register, ProQual must see evidence of your trade experience and your supervising experience. You need one of these:
- a Level 2 NVQ (or SVQ) in your trade, or
- a letter from your employer confirming you are suitable, plus a professional discussion or a portfolio of your past work
We help you gather this when we check your eligibility.
Questions people ask
Does the Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Work Supervision get me a gold card?
It usually supports a gold Supervisor card. You also need the CITB Specialist Supervisory test, passed within the last two years. We confirm your card when we check your eligibility.
Do I need a Level 2 NVQ first?
Not always. A Level 2 NVQ in your trade is one way to show your experience. A letter from your employer plus a professional discussion or portfolio is another.
How long does the Level 3 NVQ take?
The typical assessment time for this level is in the facts at the top of this page. It depends on your experience and how quickly you send your evidence.
Is OWS the same as the Level 4 site supervision NVQ?
No. OWS is for supervisors in one trade. Level 4 is for supervisors and assistant managers of a whole site.
