About this timeframe
NVQ assessment duration varies depending on each candidate's experience, availability, workplace access, responsiveness and timely completion of assessment requirements. Experienced candidates with suitable existing evidence or relevant previous qualifications may complete their assessments considerably sooner through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), where applicable. Candidates requiring additional time or assessment support may take longer.
The stated duration is an indicative assessment completion period, not a guaranteed timeframe. All required assessment criteria must be satisfactorily met before certification can be recommended.
Please Note: The estimated completion period relates to the assessment process and does not necessarily include the time required for internal quality assurance, awarding-body verification and certificate issuance. Certification is subject to the satisfactory completion of all assessment and applicable quality assurance requirements.

- CPCS construction plant NVQs
A skid steer is small, quick and turns in its own length. A loading shovel moves tonnes of material at a time. Both are easy to drive badly and hard to drive well. If you drive well, this NVQ puts that on paper.
This Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations is for loading shovel and skid steer loader operators. We assess you on your own site, on your normal work.
Who it is for
You load, carry and clear material with one of these machines. For example, you:
- run a skid steer on landscaping, groundworks or demolition clear up
- drive a loading shovel in a stockpile, recycling or earthworks area
- hold a red CPCS Trained Operator card and need the NVQ before it ends
Machines this page covers
We list this NVQ for the loading shovel and the skid steer loader. They are separate CPCS categories. Tell us which you drive and what your card says. We check it matches before you pay anything.
Your assessment, step by step
- We check your skills and knowledge and plan what evidence you need. There are no formal entry requirements.
- Your assessor visits and watches you load, carry and place material, then asks you questions.
- You add worksheets, short test papers and records of your jobs to your portfolio.
- When every unit is met, your assessor puts you forward for your certificate.
What CPCS asks for
Your red Trained Operator card lasts two years. CPCS expects you to register for an NVQ and achieve it in that time.
Running out of time? If you are registered for an NVQ in the right category, CPCS can give you a 12-month extension card so you can finish.
To upgrade, you send CPCS proof of the NVQ and of a health, safety and environment test from the last two years. You then get a blue Competent Operator card for five years.
