About this timeframe
NVQ assessment duration varies depending on each candidate's experience, availability, workplace access, responsiveness and timely completion of assessment requirements. Experienced candidates with suitable existing evidence or relevant previous qualifications may complete their assessments considerably sooner through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), where applicable. Candidates requiring additional time or assessment support may take longer.

How the assessment works
An erect or dismantle does not happen every day, so we plan around your job list. Tell us when the next one is booked and your assessor plans the visit for that day. Between visits you add to your portfolio. It can hold:
- notes from your assessor, who watched you work
- your answers to spoken or written questions
- worksheets and short test papers
- projects or reports on jobs you have done
There are no formal entry requirements. We start by checking your skills and knowledge, so we know what to plan.
Your card: the route CPCS sets
A red Trained Operator card comes first. You get it by passing the health, safety and environment test and the CPCS theory and practical tests. It is valid for two years, and in that time you must register for an NVQ and achieve it.
If time is short, CPCS offers a one-off 12-month card extension once you are registered for an NVQ in the right category. When the NVQ is done, you apply to upgrade, and CPCS issues a blue Competent Operator card for five years.
Price and starting
