- Typical assessment duration
- 4–6 weeks
About this timeframe
NVQ assessment duration varies depending on each candidate's experience, availability, workplace access, responsiveness and timely completion of assessment requirements. Experienced candidates with suitable existing evidence or relevant previous qualifications may complete their assessments considerably sooner through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), where applicable. Candidates requiring additional time or assessment support may take longer.
The stated duration is an indicative assessment completion period, not a guaranteed timeframe. All required assessment criteria must be satisfactorily met before certification can be recommended.
Please Note: The estimated completion period relates to the assessment process and does not necessarily include the time required for internal quality assurance, awarding-body verification and certificate issuance. Certification is subject to the satisfactory completion of all assessment and applicable quality assurance requirements.

Dumpers and dump trucks carry the muck and materials that keep a site moving, and concrete pumps put the concrete where it needs to go. In the wrong hands these machines can tip over or hit someone, so contractors want proof that the person in the seat is competent.
This Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations gives you that proof. It is for forward tipping dumper, dump truck and concrete pump operators, and our assessor checks your work on your own site.
Who it is for
You run one of these machines on construction or civil engineering jobs. For example, you:
- drive a forward tipping dumper on groundworks and need to turn your red CPCS card blue
- drive a dump truck on earthworks or a quarry style site and have years of experience but no NVQ
- run a concrete pump on pours and your employer wants your card up to date
Machines this page covers
We list this NVQ for the forward tipping dumper, dump truck and concrete pumps. Each one is a separate CPCS category. Tell us which you operate so we register you on the right units.
What happens in your NVQ
You keep working. Your assessor visits, watches you load, travel, tip or pump, and asks you questions about what you are doing and why. Your portfolio then holds:
- observation notes from your assessor
- your spoken and written answers
- worksheets and short test papers
- records and reports of your jobs
No formal entry requirements apply. First we check your skills and knowledge so your plan fits you.
How your CPCS card fits in
There are two ways to a blue Competent Operator card, and both need the NVQ.
- If you already hold a red Trained Operator card, you finish the NVQ within its two years, keep your health, safety and environment test in date, and apply to CPCS to upgrade.
- If you are new to CPCS, you can take the health, safety and environment test, show your NVQ, then pass the CPCS theory and practical tests at a CPCS test centre. The centre then asks CPCS for your blue card.
A blue card lasts five years. CPCS asks you to keep a logbook of your hours from then on, to help you renew.
