NVQ assessment duration varies depending on each candidate's experience, availability, workplace access, responsiveness and timely completion of assessment requirements. The Level 6 NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is for people who build and run health and safety systems at work. It is awarded by ProQual and regulated by Ofqual. You show your competence through the work you already do, so there are no exams.
Level 6 is the same level as a bachelor's degree. With this qualification you can apply for a black CSCS card and for graduate-level IOSH membership.
Who it is for
ProQual says this NVQ is for people who develop and apply health and safety procedures every day in their organisation. You might be:
- a health and safety advisor, officer or manager
- a supervisor or manager with health and safety duties
- a construction health and safety manager
You need a role that lets you show the work in each unit. Candidates must be aged 19 or over.
What you will cover
You complete all ten units. In plain words, you show that you can:
- build a positive health and safety culture
- write and put in place a health and safety policy
- share health and safety information well
- keep people and the organisation competent
- find, assess and control risks
- check safety before things go wrong (proactive monitoring)
- learn from accidents and incidents (reactive monitoring)
- plan for emergencies
- review how well the systems work
- keep your own knowledge up to date
How it is assessed
There is no exam. An NVQ checks that you can do your job to the national standard. Your assessor collects evidence from the work you already do. Evidence can include:
- a visit to your workplace, where the assessor watches you work
- a portfolio of your own work documents
- a professional discussion with your assessor
- witness statements from people you work with
- reports, policies and risk assessments you have written
We assess on site at your workplace or remotely, for candidates working across the UK. The result is a pass or a fail. ProQual, the awarding body, checks our assessment through its own quality assurance.
Card, membership and progression
CSCS lists this NVQ for senior construction health and safety managers. For the card you also need the CITB Managers and Professionals test. A CSCS card is valid for five years.
IOSH now calls the Graduate grade Certified Member (CertIOSH). It asks for a Level 6 or 7 qualification and two years of relevant experience.

Can I get GradIOSH with this NVQ?
