- 4–6 weeks
About this timeframe
NVQ assessment duration varies depending on each candidate's experience, availability, workplace access, responsiveness and timely completion of assessment requirements. Experienced candidates with suitable existing evidence or relevant previous qualifications may complete their assessments considerably sooner through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), where applicable. Candidates requiring additional time or assessment support may take longer.
The stated duration is an indicative assessment completion period, not a guaranteed timeframe. All required assessment criteria must be satisfactorily met before certification can be recommended.
Please Note: The estimated completion period relates to the assessment process and does not necessarily include the time required for internal quality assurance, awarding-body verification and certificate issuance. Certification is subject to the satisfactory completion of all assessment and applicable quality assurance requirements.

Every lift you make goes over people's heads. Main contractors and lift supervisors want to know that the person at the controls is proven, not just trained. For crane operators, that proof is a blue CPCS card, and the NVQ is how you get it.
This Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations is for mobile, crawler and tower crane operators. We assess you in the cab, on real lifts, on your own site.
Who it is for
You already operate a crane on construction sites. For example, you:
- drive a mobile crane between sites and lift on each one
- operate a crawler crane on a civil engineering or infrastructure job
- work in the cab of a tower crane on a building site and hold a red CPCS card
Cranes this page covers
We list this NVQ for mobile cranes, crawler cranes and tower cranes. Each one is its own CPCS category, and some have size or duty limits. Tell us your crane and your card before you register.
What you will show
Your assessor watches you set up, carry out lifts to the lift plan and work with your slinger and signaller. You build a portfolio that covers each unit, using:
- what your assessor sees on your lifts
- your answers to spoken or written questions
- worksheets and short test papers
- reports and records of your jobs
No formal entry requirements apply. We check your experience first, so the plan fits the lifts you do.
Card rules, from CPCS
With a red Trained Operator card, you have two years to register for and achieve your NVQ. Then you apply to upgrade with your NVQ and a health, safety and environment test passed in the last two years. CPCS issues a blue Competent Operator card that lasts five years.
New to CPCS? You can also go straight to blue: show your NVQ, pass the health, safety and environment test, then pass the CPCS theory and practical tests at an accredited test centre.
Price and time
£660 inc VAT (£550 + VAT), paid in two halves or in full. Typically 4 to 6 weeks of assessment, depending on when your lifts are booked. Phone 01322 743726.
