About this timeframe
NVQ assessment duration varies depending on each candidate's experience, availability, workplace access, responsiveness and timely completion of assessment requirements. Experienced candidates with suitable existing evidence or relevant previous qualifications may complete their assessments considerably sooner through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), where applicable. Candidates requiring additional time or assessment support may take longer.
The stated duration is an indicative assessment completion period, not a guaranteed timeframe. All required assessment criteria must be satisfactorily met before certification can be recommended.
Please Note: The estimated completion period relates to the assessment process and does not necessarily include the time required for internal quality assurance, awarding-body verification and certificate issuance. Certification is subject to the satisfactory completion of all assessment and applicable quality assurance requirements.

- CPCS construction plant NVQs
You lay, plane or roll the roads that everyone else drives on. You know the machine. But if your CPCS card is red, it only lasts two years, and you need an NVQ before it runs out.
This Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations is that NVQ for road plant operators. Our assessor comes to your road job and watches you work. You do not stop work or travel to a centre.
Who it is for
You work on road building, resurfacing or highways jobs and you run the plant. For example, you:
- hold a red CPCS Trained Operator card for a road plant category and need to upgrade it
- have run road plant for years but have no qualification to show for it
- have been told by a contractor that you need a blue card before you can work on their roads
Machines this page covers
We list this NVQ as Road Plants and Machineries. Tell us the machine you run and the category on your card. We check that it matches the units we assess before you pay anything.
What you do
You show your assessor that you can run your machine safely and to the required standard, on a real job. You build a portfolio of evidence for every unit. Evidence can include:
- your assessor watching you work
- answers to spoken or written questions
- worksheets and short test papers
- reports or records of jobs you have done
Before you start, we look at your skills and experience to find any gaps and plan your assessment. There are no formal entry requirements.
From red card to blue card
CPCS sets the card rules. In short:
- You get a red Trained Operator card after you pass the health, safety and environment test and the CPCS theory and practical tests for your category. It lasts two years.
- In those two years, you register for the NVQ and finish it.
- You then apply to CPCS to upgrade, with proof of your NVQ and a health, safety and environment test passed in the last two years.
- CPCS issues a blue Competent Operator card, valid for five years.
